Gaia Theory

The Gaia theory is an ecological hypothesis that links the biosphere and the physical make up of the Earth, which are known as the atmosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere, into a tightly integrated system. The system is incredibly complex and is designed by nature itself to maintain the climatic and biogeochemical conditions of the Earth in a preferred homeostasis.

James Lovelock (who is also well known for discovering the build up of CFC’s in the atmosphere) originally proposed the idea as the Gaia Hypothesis, named after the Greek primordial goddess of the Earth. The hypothesis is frequently described as viewing the Earth as a single organism. Lovelock and other believers in the idea now call it Gaia theory, regarding it as a scientific theory and not mere hypothesis, since they believe it has now surpassed the predictive tests put in place.
