The Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the government will present a mid and longer term plan for developing “green” and “smart” ships by the second half of this year. The Korean government is also looking into a number of plans to help nurture businesses such as offshore plants and equipment suppliers for marine leisure to help strengthen the country’s shipbuilding industry.
An official was quoting as saying “It is true that Korea is in an unrivaled position in the world’s shipbuilding industry. However, the project’s goal is for the early development of new technologies to discover new markets and demand in the future”
Korea is currently the world’s largest shipbuilding nation, with seven of the world’s top ten shipyards. The top three are also Korean and can be named as Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co.
The Korean government is also said to be considering adding support for the on-going development of fuel cells and other eco friendly alternative energy sources to power large engines.
