Latest Airline Recycling Figures
American based company, Responsibleshopper.org has recently released their survey figures to demonstrate which of it’s countries airlines are good with their recyclable waste and which ones need to pull their socks up.
To put the American industry alone into some sort of perspective, it has been estimated that US Airlines alone generates some where in the region of 800 Million pounds of waste products (both in flight and in day to day business) per year. Approximately 75 percent of this waste is made of recyclable materials, but only 20 percent actually makes it to recycling processing.
TheĀ summerised figures were able to show the airlines that were best at recycling where Delta, Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic and Southwest, while US Airways and United were at the bottom end of the table.
There is room for improvement with at least another 500 Million pounds of recyclable waste products that can be disposed of each year by the American Airline industry. The system could be made better by initiating a comprehensive recycling program based around either minimizing or composting food waste and by providing better public information service about their in-house recycling programs.
