Some thoughts and questions about the Gaia Hypothesis of James Lovelock. “Mars is lifeless,” he says, and tells Carl Sagan that, no, life cannot exist there in “oases” of favorable conditions. My question: How then must we see the earth itself? Is our planet an “oasis” in a lifeless solar system? Might not the universe itself be a living organism, if the earth is?
David Suzuki talks with James Lovelock about the origins of his “Gaia” hypothesis, which suggests that the Earth is one organism. This is part 11 in my 17 part series about science education in America and its effects on American politics. This one covers the connection between chemistry and biology at the environmental level. Only parts 3 and 5 are less than 10 minutes, so I will have to recut the other sections and post them here later. Parts 2 through 6 are currently available for free download at these sites: 2 The Limits to Growth: video.indymedia.org 3 The Selfish Gene: video.indymedia.org 4 Evolutionary Psychology: video.indymedia.org 5 The Gaia Theory: video.indymedia.org 6 Thermodynamics: video.indymedia.org
In 10 episodes here on YouTube Dr. Harding lead you into a new understanding of our beloved mother Earth. Earth, or Gaia as he prefers to say, needs to be taken care of now. The human rase is about to amuse itself to death on how we exploit the resources. Inspired by James Lovelock (1919 – ) who is a pioneer and rolemodel in this field. He is an independent scientist, author, researcher, environmentalist, and futurist. He is known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, in which he postulates that the Earth functions as a kind of superorganism. This qoute from the great philosopher says it all: “All life has intrinsic value, irrespective of its value to humans” – Arne Naess, (1912 – 2009) RIP Arne Næss was the founder of deep ecology. He is widely regarded as the foremost Norwegian philosopher of the 20th century Dr. Harding is bringing it all together!
