Ways To Tell If Your Home Heating Oil Is Leaking

Most people will use their heating oil system year after year without there ever being a problem. There is not much maintenance involved in a heating oil system apart from a regular check to make sure it is running ok. However occasionally some people do encounter problems with their heating oil system. One thing that can happen is that you could get a leak somewhere in the system. It is vital that you know how to recognise whether or not you have a leak in your system as it could lead to bigger problems if you don’t notice it immediately.

How To Know If You Have An Oil Leak

You should realise that it is not a huge drama if your system gets an oil leak. It is not likely to be pouring out of your tank like you might expect from seeing an oil well tapped in a movie. The first sign that some people get that their oil is leaking is an increase in their consumption even though they have not turned up their heating as their needs have remained the same. If you find that your heating requirements have not changed but your consumption has increased then there are usually two possible reasons. Either somebody is stealing it or you have a leak.

Another sign that you have a leak is finding some oil around the outside of your storage tank or elsewhere in the system. You could find a leak anywhere along the pipe which takes the oil from the tank to your boiler. If your pipes are hidden then a leak could go on for a long time without you even noticing.

It is never a good thing to have oil leaking anywhere in your system so if you spot a leak you should make contact immediately with your supplier. Although oil is quite a safe fuel it can be harmful to the environment. It can cause even worse damage if it is anywhere near to running water. And you may have to call in the help of the professionals if the spill is quite large.

Getting the home heated up during winter can be very expensive. Gas and electricity are very expensive today, with no signs of prices coming down. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. Heating oil suppliers are the people tasked with keeping home oil tanks full. Suppliers can be found all over the country, and, for example, will supply heating oil Brentwood.
